Viking Golfers Qualify Team for State

The 2019 Viking Golf Team qualified for state for the first time in 10 years on Monday, May 13 when they placed third in the district held in Bertrand. The Vikings were led by Austin Murphy who placed third in the meet with a score of 86. Brandon Dodson placed 6th with a score of 93. Other team qualifiers include Wyatt Kaps, Nick Wood and Jackson Furlong.

The state meet will be held in North Platte at Lake Maloney Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 21-22. Information for the meet can be found at NSSA Website.

Tee times for the first day are as follows:

Brandon Dodson – 9:50, Hole #1
Austin Murphy – 10:30, Hole #1
Wyatt Kaps – 10:50, Hole #10
Nick Wood – 11:00, Hole #10
Jackson Furlong – 11:10, Hole #10

Tee times for Day 2 will be determined by everyone’s Day 1 scoring.

The Viking Track Team will be sending 12 qualifiers and 2 alternates to the 2019 Nebraska State Track and Field Championships at Omaha Burke this coming Friday and Saturday May 16-17.

Grace Schwarz and Erin Boggs each qualified in four events. Senior Grace Schwarz won the triple jump, 100 meter hurdles, and anchored the winning 4×100 meter relay at districts. She will also participate as an additional qualifier in the 300 hurdles. Erin Boggs qualified by winning the 300 meter hurdles and placing second in the high jump. She was an additional qualifier in the pole vault and was also a member of the winning 4×100 meter relay.

Along with Erin Boggs in the pole vault, juniors Jada High and Sam Maloley will compete in this event. Sam will also compete as part of the 4×100 meter relay. Senior Lindsay Schutz won the shot put and Miles Peterson placed second in the long jump to earn trips to state, and Joesiah Zeiger won the 3200 meter run to advance to the state championships.

Sprinters Ethan Klingenberg and Yesenia Lopez will be competing as well. Ethan qualified in the 100 meter dash while Yesenia will compete in the 200 meter dash. Both are members of their respective 4×100 meter relays. Jonah Nelson and Aleya Hueftle will also run on their respective 4×100 meter relays. Jose Murillo and Johanna Ford will be going to state as alternates for the 4×100 meter relays.

Send off for the team will be on Thursday morning at 11:00 from the school. The first scheduled event for the Vikings will be on Friday afternoon at 3:30 with Sam Maloley in the pole vault and will end with Lindsay Schutz who will throw at 3:00 on Saturday.

Vikings fired up for districts

Heading into the district on Wednesday May, 8th, the Vikings are fired up about the chances of many athletes qualifying for the state meet.

The boys pole vault is sitting 1, 2, and 3 for placing at districts. With Sam Maloley sitting first 13’6″, and Arik Ackerman and Ignacio Estrada sitting 2nd and 3rd with vaults of 13′ even. The automatic qualifying is 12’2″ which all the boys can get.

On the girls side, Erin Boggs is sitting 1st with a vault of 9’6″, and Johanna Ford is sitting in a good spot with a vault of 9′ even, which is the automatic state qualifying for the girls.

Another set of athletes that have a great shot at winning districts is the girls hurdlers. With Aleya Hueftle, Erin Boggs, and Grace Schwarz all sitting in a great spot competing for that gold.

The girls and boys 4x100m relays are sitting first in the district. The girls time of 54.9 with athletes, Yesinia Lopez, Aleya Hueftle, Erin Boggs, and Grace Schwarz puts them in a great postion. The boys have a school record tying time of 45.4 with athletes Sam Maloley, Austin Long, Jonah Nelson and Ethan Klingenberg.

The shot putter Lindsay Schutz is tied for first in the district with a throw of 34’11” and is sitting 4th in the district in discus with a throw of 101’10”.

Ethan Klingenberg is sitting 1st in the district in the 100m dash with a time of 11.2 seconds. He is also sitting 2nd in the 200m dash.

The athletes are excited and ready to compete Wednesday, May 8 at the district meet in Hitchcock County.
