2019 Preseason Football

The 2019 Football Team is looking to have a very successful season. The Vikings only have six upperclassmen this year, so they are looking down to the younger members to pull their weight. During the off-season, the boys lifted weights and attended camps. They worked hard, looking to improve in any way possible.

Returning Coaches Steve Colfack, Mark Dethlefs, and Craig Newcomb have a lot more to watch this season after losing two coaches from last season. Although it’s going to be a big change for the team, Coach Colfack doesn’t think it will affect the boys performance for the season.

The boys have a lasting tradition of a strong brotherhood. Upperclassmen are good about including the younger teammates in and outside of practice. After losing 8 Seniors last year, the returning players are hoping to work hard and dominate this season. With 23 team members, this season is looking to be very promising for the Vikings.

Four Vikings Compete at State Speech

The NSAA State Speech Meet is underway and once again, the Vikings are sending a talented group of speakers to compete for honors.  Four students will be competing in five events in today’s D-1 contest at UNK.  First round competitions start at 9:30.  Isaiah Schwarz will be busy as he competes in two events today.  Those watching will definitely find themselves laughing as he performs his Oral Interpretation of Humorous Prose speech as a Scottish sheep herder.  Also, in his Oral Interpretation of Poetry rounds, he will use poetry to give insight into the importance of friendships. Wyatt Kaps will be entertaining his audience with his Entertainment Speaking speech about “Procrastination”.  Others will learn about Austism from Amanda Patterson in the Informative Speaking rounds.  Finally, Joesiah Zeigler will be persuading his audiences of the “Dangers of Opioids.

All first round competitions will start at 9:30 and second round events will begin at 12:30.  These will be performed in various buildings throughout the UNK campus.  Finals will begin at 3:30 for those who qualify out of their first two rounds this morning.  Class D-1 awards are scheduled to begin at 6:00 in the UNK Health and Sports Center.

Young Talent Ready For Success

With the 2018 Viking Volleyball season in full swing, the Vikings look to have another successful season. This year the Vikings will be rebuilding their team after losing 5 senior starters to graduation. The 15 player roster will give them the options they need to get it done. This young team looks to be energetic and swift in hopes to progress through the season.

Several players switched positions this season. Seniors Grace Schwarz and Lindsay Schutz moved to outside hitters from middle and are looking strong in their new position. Erin Boggs has stepped up in the setting role, changing from the DS position. Jada High is the only returning starter that stayed in the same position and has picked up from where she left off a year ago. Others that look to earn starting positions this season are Aleya Hueftle and Johanna Ford who look to move into the middle hitter positions. Jennica Dannehl on the right side and Macie Steinbrink as a serving specialist.

Even though the Vikings will be taking on many tough teams, they hope to grow together and become one of the top contenders in the area.

Returning to this year’s team are seniors Lindsay Schutz and Grace Schwarz, juniors Jada High and Jennica Dannehl, sophomores Macie Steinbrink, Anna Pelton, Karley Patterson, Erin Boggs, and Aleya Hueftle. Incoming freshman are Johanna Ford, Jordan Hilmer, Julissa Estrada, Jameson High, Yesenia Lopez, and Kenzy Drain.
