Mark Dethlefs has been a loyal coach to the Viking football program for 23 years. He has coached 38 years total. Before coming to Bertrand, he coached at two other schools, Sioux County Harrison, and Ewing. This summer he was given the opportunity to coach in the Sertoma East and West 8-man All-Star game in Hastings. However, this wasn’t his first all-star game. In 1986. he was chosen to coach in the East-West All Star game in Scottsbluff.
Two 2019 Viking graduates were also chosen to play one last time under Coach Dethlefs direction in the Sertoma Classic. Jordan Holen and Dylan Boggs were among those selected by the states coaches. When asked how it felt to coach his own players he said, “It was fun. It was a different setting where it’s not all about winning. It’s more about having fun.” Winning wasn’t the main priority, but the West did win, 34-22. He commented that it’s definitely something he would do again.
